On Thursday 15th June, we have arranged a self-drive visit to two gardens in South Newington.
Claire Ainley and her husband David will be opening the gardens of South Newington House and Bush House nearby for us at 2 pm. Claire will give a short talk to introduce the gardens and tea and cakes will be served from 2.45.
Claire and David bought the house with its beautiful garden from her parents 12 years ago. Her parents arrived in 1985. Her father John and her mother, who was a talented gardener and designer landscaped and planted the garden at Bush House which was originally just a field. There are beautiful views over open countryside. Bush House is a short walk through a side gate, across the busy main road and up the lane to the left where it is the first house on the left.
There are herbaceous borders providing a haven for wildlife, orchards, woodland, kitchen gardens managed on rotation and where possible gardened organically, formal box hedge parterre, water features and bee hives. The gardens are full of colour and planted with great skill and knowledge. John is still gardening with great enthusiasm and developing new projects.
There are gravel paths and lawns to make the gardens accessible by wheel chair or mobility scooter and toilets are available. Assistance dogs only please.
At the end of her life, Claire’s mother was looked after by the Lawrence Home Nursing Team and Katharine House Hospice so the charge of £10 per person for the visit and teas goes to support them and NGS which facilitate this.

As with previous self-drive trips we would like to encourage car sharing where possible, so please also indicate if you would like a lift, or would be willing to give a lift to others. We will endeavour to match those requiring a lift with those who are willing to share.
