Jan & Jim's allotment

We have had an allotment on the Enstone Road (Pest House site!) for over 30 years, but have been on our current plot for 28 years, rain and shine.

The original plot was approx. 300 square metres, reduced to approx. 200 square metres when we split the plot with a neighbour. The site is exposed to the south westerlies and the soil is patchy, much of it being brash. It needs a lot of feeding with homemade compost & leaf mould, together with the best local manure. We grow organically, a range of annual vegetables, soft fruit bushes and 2 fruit trees. We had the first greenhouse on the site, to extend the growing season. Every year is a challenge and every year we have surprises and disappointments – but that is the life of a gardener. Optimism is the key.
